We went to Maricunga's Salar on last october and here is our amazing trip...
After a long 11 hours in a car, finally we arrived to "Caleta Pan de Azúcar" in the heart of Pan de Azúcar National Park . The place is a quiet homestead in a harbor near Chañaral, our start point.
As early as possible, we start ride our motorcycles and take the road to El Salvador. After 146 kilometers we have a tasty breakfast in "La Barra" restaurant, a very cheap place for a fast food.
The planned trip included reaching the Maricunga border complex, with an ascent of 1100 meters and 140 kilometers, so it was necessary to bring additional gasoline for the return, bearing in mind that the next supply would be almost 500 kilometers later. If you plan keep in Maricunga more one day, is necessary to carry some provisions and water, because there are not supplies in there, However, the people that work there is extremely kind with the visitors, then always is possible to resolve any difficulties that appear.
Once in the customs complex, we decided to go to "Laguna Verde", an additional 60 kilometers to the east and another 1000 meters of ascent.
The decision, however, was the best: The landscapes we saw were simply spectacular! We had never seen a salty and cold lagoon at that height. Nor do we plan to enjoy the hot springs that are in the place.
We returned to the complex at around 8:30 pm, when the return from that place is no longer allowed, so we spend the night there. Although the temperature dropped 0 degrees, the cold was compensated by the starry sky.
The next morning, after a light breakfast, we headed for Copiapó, by an amazing route, full of slopes, gorges and cliffs, until returning to "normal" heights, close to 800 meters above sea level.
The next stop: Llanos de Challe. But we will comment on that later.
